Thrifty plant shopping

Ever wanted to get all the plants that your heart desires but find it all accumulates very quickly? Plants are often not cheap to come by, especially when you are buying for quality and out of season.

Especially as a student I have had to find ways to collect the plants I like without breaking my budget, and that is going for the reduced section!

Yesterday I picked up a couple of new contenders for the garden: a blue Hydrangea and gorgeous Salvia.

The Hydrangea was reduced to £5 as it needed just a little TLC, which is an amazing bargain compared to the £15 ones that were exactly the same size.

All you have to do is take your secateurs and cut the flower stalk just before a node, or where the leaves emerge from the stem.

Remember, if you're giving this a go to give your hydrangea a good soak when you have planted it in.

This will stop it from drying out from stress and encourage roots to grow.

I'll admit it's looking a little bit small in it's new home in my shady flowerbed, but it should rise to the challenge and flower again this summer. I can't wait to see the striking blue mopheads again soon!

There're no plant that cannot be saved when it is at the back of the store, so be the rescuer and I assure you that it will reward you!
